“Skip The Butcher—go to Beef Chief in Noord for the real smash burger deal. Free ferry, great beer, and no table service.”
My friend Thomas took me here last spring, and honestly, it was the first time I realized that people who say The Butcher has the best burger in Amsterdam are just wrong. You’ve got to get to Noord, take the free ferry from Centraal Station to Buiksloterweg, and walk into Oedipus Brewery where Beef Chief is set up. It’s a small spot, industrial space, communal tables, and garage doors open on sunny days. You order at the counter, no table service, but that’s kind of the vibe. I’m not sure why, but it works here. The double smash burger is the real deal — thin patties, crispy edges, American cheese, pickles, their own sauce. It’s a bit like a casual diner but with a beer garden feel. The beer is from Oedipus, which makes some of the best craft beer in Amsterdam. I had a Mannenliefde IPA, and it was the perfect pairing. I’ve been back a few times since, and I always go for the double smash with cheese. It’s around 14 to 16 euros, which is fair for what you get. The fries are good, but I always order the fried cauliflower or chicken wings as sides. It’s not fancy, but it’s honest and the food is solid. I’ve been here on weekend afternoons and it’s always packed, so if you want a better vibe, go Thursday not Friday. It’s also worth noting that they’re closed on Tuesdays, and Sundays they’re only open from 2 to 9 PM. The vibe is loud, but not unpleasantly so. It’s a good spot for a casual bite, especially if you’re in Noord or just want to try something different. I’ve never seen a burger that looked more like a smash, and it tastes like it too. If you're into craft beer and crave a real American-style burger, this place is a solid choice. Just don’t expect a table, and be ready to wait a bit on weekends. I’d definitely recommend checking if that deal’s still on, especially if you're planning to hit it on a weekend. The whole setup feels like a local favorite that’s been around for a while, not some trendy spot trying too hard. It’s a place where you can eat and drink like you’re in a backyard, but with a brewery next door. I know a few people who have been here multiple times, and they always come back. It’s not just a food spot, it’s a vibe. If you're in Amsterdam, and you're into burgers and beer, this is one of the places you shouldn’t skip.
